About Gir Safari
Gir National Park is located in Gujarat, and it is the only natural home of the Asiatic lion. Because of this, it is one of the most important wildlife destinations in India. Every year, many visitors come here to see lions, leopards, deer, and many kinds of birds. The forest is very large and has many animals, so every safari feels different and exciting.
If you are planning to visit, it is important to choose the right Gir safari booking option. The park is managed by the forest department, and everything is properly organized. About Zones In Gir
Gir Jungle Trail (Sasan Gir)
Gir Jungle Trail is the main safari area and the most popular one in Gir National Park. It is also known as the core zone. This is the best place if you want to experience the real forest and explore it properly.
Safari in this zone is done in an open gypsy. Inside the forest, there are 13 fixed routes, and your route is given randomly at the entry gate. Visitors are not allowed to choose their route. This system helps control the number of vehicles and keeps animals safe. Each permit allows up to 6 adults and 1 child. You must complete your Gir safari booking online before your visit to enter this zone.
This area gives a proper jungle experience and is the best option if you want to see lions in their natural surroundings. However, this zone remains closed every year during the monsoon season, usually from 16 June to 15 October.
Devalia Safari Park (Gir Interpretation Zone)
Devalia Safari Park is a smaller safari area near Sasan Gir. It was created to reduce the crowd in the main jungle and to give visitors a simple and quick safari option.
It is located about 12 to 13 km from the main gate and covers around 412 hectares. In this zone, visitors can choose between a bus safari or a gypsy safari. Animals like lions, leopards, and deer are easier to see here because the area is smaller and well-managed.
This zone is a good choice if you have less time or if you want an easy safari experience. Sightings are more common here, so many first-time visitors prefer it. Devalia Safari Park remains open throughout the year, even during the monsoon, but it is closed every Wednesday.
When the main jungle is closed, this becomes the best option for visitors. That is why many Gir tour packages include Devalia Safari Park in their plans.
Kankai Mata Temple Trail
Kankai Mata Temple Trail is different from other safari zones. It is mainly for visiting a temple inside the forest area.
The temple is located about 25 km inside the forest, near a river. Travel on this route is done using closed vehicles like private cars or SUVs. Visitors need a forest permit to enter this area, so advance planning is required. You may see animals during the journey,
but this is not a proper wildlife safari. The main purpose is to visit the temple. Entry is allowed only from sunrise to sunset, and overnight stay is not permitted inside the forest. There are strict rules for movement to keep visitors safe.
This option is suitable for people who want a religious visit along with a short forest drive.
Girnar Nature Safari
Girnar Nature Safari is a newer safari option near Junagadh. It is not part of the main Sasan Gir forest but is located in Girnar Wildlife Sanctuary.
This safari covers around a 13 km route. The area has hills and rocky land, which is different from the flat land of Gir. This place also has Asiatic lions along with other animals. This safari gives a different kind of experience because of its landscape.
It is a good option for visitors who want to try something new apart from the main Gir Jungle Trail.
However, this safari remains closed during the monsoon season from 16 June to 15 October. It is also closed during special events like Girnar Parikrama and Mahashivratri due to the heavy crowd.
Best Time To Visit Gir
Choosing the right time is very important for a good safari experience. Each season offers something different, so you should plan your visit based on your comfort and what you want to see.
Winter Season (November to February)
Winter is a comfortable time to visit Gir. The weather is cool, with temperatures between 10°C and 25°C. This season is perfect for families and relaxed travel.
It is also a good time for birdwatching because many birds visit Gir during this period. The forest looks green and fresh, but animals can be slightly harder to spot because there is more greenery.
This season is great for booking Gir tour packages because of the pleasant weather and easy travel conditions.
Summer Season (March to June)
Summer in Gir is very hot, and temperatures can go above 40°C. Even though the weather is not comfortable, this is the best time to see lions and other animals.
During summer, animals come near water sources more often, which makes sightings easier. If your main goal is to see wildlife clearly, this is the best season for you.
It is better to choose morning safaris because they are more comfortable than afternoon ones. You should plan properly and complete your Gir safari booking early, as this season is popular among wildlife lovers.
Monsoon Season (Mid-June to Mid-October)
During the monsoon season, the main Gir Jungle Trail and Girnar Nature Safari remain closed. This time is used for animal breeding and for repair work inside the forest.
Only Devalia Safari Park remains open, except during heavy rain or extreme weather conditions. If you are visiting Gir during this time, you should plan only for the Devalia Safari.
Even though options are limited, you can still enjoy a short safari experience. Some Gir tour packages are available during this season, mainly focusing on Devalia Safari Park.
