About Sasan Gir
Gir National Park, also called Sasan Gir, is the only natural home of the Asiatic Lion, known as Panthera leo persica. It became a protected area in 1965. The total area is about 1,412 sq km, and the main park area is around 258 sq km. This place is very important for saving lions and other animals.
Sasan Gir has many types of plants and animals. There are more than 600 species. It has 41 types of mammals, like leopards, chital (spotted deer), sambar, and nilgai. You can also see more than 300 kinds of birds, so it is a good place for bird lovers.
The land here has small hills, dry forests, and open grasslands. Seven rivers flow in this area, including the Hiran, Saraswati, and Shingoda. These rivers give water all year, so animals can live here even in the hot months.

Best Time To Visit Sasan Gir
The best time to visit Sasan Gir is from October 16 to the end of February. During this time, the weather is cool and comfortable, between 10°C and 25°C. It is easy to travel, and safaris are more enjoyable.
From March to June, it becomes very hot, and the temperature can go up to 42°C. This time is still good for seeing animals because they often come near water sources.
The park is closed every year from June 16 to October 15 because of heavy rain during the monsoon. It is not safe to travel inside the forest at that time.
Things To Do In Sasan Gir
- The main activity in Sasan Gir is the Gir Jungle Safari. You can sit in an open gypsy with a trained guide and explore the forest. It is important to book your safari permit online before your visit.
- Devalia Safari Park, also known as Gir Interpretation Zone, is a smaller area where the chances of seeing lions are higher. It is open all year except Wednesday.
- You can also visit the crocodile breeding center near the entrance. It is one of the largest centers in India for Mugger crocodiles.
- Another good place is Kamleshwar Dam, where you can enjoy birdwatching and see crocodiles near the water.
How To Reach Sasan Gir
There are many easy options if you are curious about how to reach Sasan Gir.
- By road, Sasan Gir is well connected to nearby cities like Junagadh, Veraval, Somnath, and Ahmedabad.
- By air, the nearest airport is Keshod, about 60 km away. Diu Airport is about 100 km away and has good flight connections. Rajkot Airport is around 160 km away.
- By train, the nearest big railway stations are Junagadh Junction and Veraval Railway Station. Sasan Gir also has a small railway station, but most people use the bigger ones.
